PERFORMANCES

Sanctuary was created as a platform to showcase inspiring, innovative artistic performances. As project manager Michael Birch says, “Collaboration both makes it more fun, and gives it more meaning.”

On the lower level, the “pulpit” was designed as a large DJ booth. On the upper level, a 20-foot-wide open roof deck adapts as a stage for live shows.

At Burning Man in 2018, Sanctuary was used in the following ways. If you’d like to collaborate with us for a future performance, drop us a line.

Live Music

The Oakland-based band Whiskerman brought their soulful, mythical, raw sound, while Seattle-based Gabriel Wolfschild delivered a tenderly poetic acoustic set. Both performed live sets on the roof of Sanctuary.

Pink Floyd Laser Show

For two nights, the original Dark Side of the Moon laser show was projected in sync with the music. The first occasion was in collaboration with the 747, the Jumbo Jet brought to Burning Man by the Bay Area camp Big Imagination — which made a perfect and surreal canvas. The second time, the lasers were projected on the 100-foot-diameter Orb, brought to the playa by Denmark artists Bjarke Ingels and Jakob Lange — an equally spectacular surface for projection.

Playa Choir

No church is complete without a Sunday service, so Sanctuary was graced by the singers of the non-dogmatic, spirit-driven Playa Choir during its 15th year at Burning Man.
